Europa Grotesk is a typeface family designed in 1922 by Jan Mieger for the Deberny & Peignot Type Foundry. The atherogenic lipid profile and early atherosclerosis development are influenced by environmental risk factors, such as diet, sex, age and ethnicity. Amongst these, genetic factors and maternal nutrition during early gestation, pregnancy and lactation also influence the offspring's risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to examine whether the early nutrition of rat dams in the 1st and 2nd weeks of gestation influences offspring lipid profiles and atherosclerosis. Lactating rats were fed either a low-protein diet (LP) (5% casein) or a normal-protein diet (NP) (19% casein) during gestation and lactation. Both male and female offspring of the LP group had higher total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and a higher percentage of body fat at both 8 and 12 weeks of age than those of the NP group. Liver triglycerides of the LP male and female offspring were significantly higher than those of NP. The atherogenic index was higher in the LP male and female offspring, which was due to increased LDL-cholesterol. Male offspring in the LP group had higher serum triglyceride concentrations than the NP male offspring at 12 weeks of age. The expression of apoB and apoE mRNA in the liver was increased in both LP male and female offspring when compared with NP. The levels of apoB and apoE mRNA in the liver were positively correlated with triglyceride and total cholesterol. These results demonstrate that maternal protein restriction in the first and second weeks of gestation modifies the lipid profiles and atherosclerotic lesion in the offspring of the LP dams in the LP group, and provides an animal model for studying the early origin of cardiovascular disease.Myxoma of the mitral valve.
